Xanthine (EC 200-718-6) and hypoxanthine ( EC200-697-3) are important intermediates in the process of purine metabolism, which are widely present in organisms. In cells, hypoxanthine can be oxidized to xanthine by xanthine oxidase (XOD). Xanthine is then further oxidized to uric acid by xanthine oxidase, and uric acid is then excreted through the kidney. Xanthine and hypoxanthine are not only key components of cellular energy metabolism, but also play important roles in a variety of physiological and pathological processes.
