SMAP-18 is a highly bioactive 18-amino acid residue peptide amide, a shortened version of SMAP-29 (sheep myeloid antimicrobial peptide-29). SMAP-29 exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas strains, other Gram-negative bacteria, and multidrug-resistant pathogens. Compared to its parent, SMAP-29, SMAP-18 demonstrates higher cell selectivity by reducing hemolytic activity while retaining its antibacterial capabilities.
