Humanin is a 24-amino acid anti-apoptotic peptide and a Bax inhibitor. Humanin prevents the translocation of Bax from the cytosol to the mitochondria, blocking the transition of Bax from its inactive to its active conformation. Humanin is a mitochondria-associated peptide with neuroprotective effects against AD-related neurotoxicity. Humanin also improves overall insulin sensitivity in animals. Humanin is associated with aging. HNG is an analog of humanin with a serine residue at position 14 replaced by glycine.
