Histatin-3 is a peptide composed of 32 amino acid residues that exhibits significant antibacterial activity. As a substrate of proprotein convertase 1 (PC1), Histatin-3 is specifically cleaved by this protease at the C-terminus of Arg25 (HRGYR reduces SN). Furthermore, Histatin-3 also acts as a moderately potent, reversible, and competitive inhibitor, inhibiting the furin-mediated cleavage of the pentapeptide pGlu-Arg-Thr-Lys-Arg-MCA fluorescent substrate with an inhibition constant Ki of approximately 1.98 μM.
