C5A is a peptide compound with antimicrobial, anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV), and anti-HIV functions. It disrupts the membrane structure of HIV viral particles and the cone-shaped capsid core surrounding the viral genome, thereby inhibiting in vitro infection of various primary HIV strains in multiple target cells. Furthermore, C5A can protect mice from vaginal and rectal HIV infection by blocking HIV entry into cells.
