Alkaloids are a class of naturally occurring alkaline organic compounds with complex molecular structures, mostly derivatives of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. Many alkaloids have significant biological activities and are the main active ingredients of non-prescription Chinese herbal medicines. Some of them have antipyretic, analgesic, antitussive, lipid-lowering, anti-oxidation, and in vitro inhibition of tumor cell proliferation. They are widely used in medicine, chemical industry, food processing and other fields. The alkaloid reacts with bromocresol green to form a yellow-green compound with a characteristic absorption peak at 416 nm. The content of alkaloid can be calculated by measuring the absorbance value.
